It occurs to me that there might be an unconscious element of racism in this reluctance to inform about favism--according to the favism organization's website, the deficiency is most common in people of African descent.

Bob Teague replied:

That's an interesting point. Historically, the intersection of G6PD deficiency with the consumption of fava beans occured in the Meriterranean cultures which were mostly European and mid-east. But in the US blacks constitute the largest group with the genetic predisposition. That's really interesting. The expert dude at Scrippps has got to know that.
